Records. Poisonings, 1905-1968.

Correspondence, advertisements, articles, clippings, and promotional and supplementary materials chronicling deaths and near-fatal accidents attributed to the use of patent medicines. Included are numerous newspaper accounts of individuals who either died or were recovering from suspected overdoses of patent medicines. Also included is material on industrial and occupational poisonings from such substances as radium, zinc, cadmium, and clothing dyes, and material on cures and treatments for plant poisonings such as poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration originated as part of the Dept. of Agriculture. In 1940, it was transferred to the Federal Security Agency, where it remained until 1953, when it became part of the newly created Dept. of Health, Education and Welfare. When the educational functions of this Department were separated to form the Dept. of Education in 1976, the remaining agencies, including the FDA, became the Dept. of Health and Human Services.
